This one-day walk across the Northern side of Mount Taranaki takes you on a 19km trek through a variety of landscapes, from the montane forest and subalpine scrub, beneath towering lava columns and across active erosion scars, and a scenic alpine wetland with unique flora.
Classic bands of vegetation have been zoned by altitude making the trip a lesson in botanical adaptation.
After crossing the unique Ahukawakawa Swamp, the climb up on to the Pouakai Plateau offers breath taking views of the journey so far, with Mt Taranaki as a backdrop.
Evening is the best time of day to capture the classic shot of the mountain reflecting in the tarns on top of the plateau and to witness the change of light and how it affects the colours on the mountain as the sun sets.
The last chapter of the walk is a night adventure to descend through the forest in the dark by head torchlight to the road end, only a 20 minute drive from central New Plymouth.
